Tomás Arango Velásquez

Colombian-Spanish Bass Baritone Tomás Arango Velásquez realized his passion for singing at a tender age of three, when he stepped on stage for the first time in front of a sizable audience at his local church.
This early experience led him to embark on a musical journey, beginning with piano lessons at the age of six. However, it wasn't until his teenage years, with encouragement from the director of his school's choir, that he took his first formal voice lessons. Subsequently, he began performing extensively as a boy treble soloist, and after experiencing his vocal transition, as a bass baritone.

He pursued his undergraduate studies in classical singing at the University of EAFIT and then furthered his education in the master’s program in Historically Informed Performance Practice at the Central University of Bogotá. Subsequently, he established himself in Vienna, where he refined his craft at the Richard Wagner Conservatory.

Tomás is distinguished for his exceptional versatility, intellectual depth, and artistic refinement, allowing him to seamlessly transition between concert and opera stages. In addition to an extensive repertoire of art songs, oratorios, and concert pieces, his operatic roles span from the early baroque to the 20th-century verismo.

Particularly well received have been his interpretations of Mozart's works, including performances as Collas in Bastien und Bastienne, Antonio and Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, Der Sprecher and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, and Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni.

Other roles include: Ottone and Seneca in L'incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi), La Notte in L’Egisto (Cavalli), Giove and La Natura in La Calisto (also Cavalli), El Tiempo in Los Elementos (Literes), the title role in Giulio Cesare (Handel), and Guccio, Pinellino, and Il Maestro Spineloccio in Gianni Schicchi (Puccini).

Since 2023, Tomás is a member of the ensemble of the Romantik Theater in Hadres, Niederösterreich. After debuting as Don Carlos Partagas in Roland Baumgartner's operetta Hotel Royale, he has continued to add new roles to his repertoire there, including Jean Pierre and Erdal/Ali Pascha in Träume im Orientexpress, and most recently, Charlie Swift in Sterne über Atlantis.

Besides his onstage activity, Tomás is a faculty member of Academia Musica in Vienna, where he teaches voice and piano. He is also the founder of Lux Vienna Productions Verein, an artistic association dedicated to fostering innovative musical projects. In addition, he remains active as a vocal coach, piano accompanist, organist, and music researcher.
